Rule of thumb on keeping you and your cosmetics free from harm.

Always wash your hands before applying creams or any kind of makeup.
Every makeup product has an optimum shelf life. So it is a good idea to chuck out your old cosmetics. Keep using it and you may end up with ugly rash and little pimples appearance.

Washing your face twice a day with the appropriate skin cleanser is enough.

Excessive cleaning can dry out your skin causing it to produce even more oil
witch can be a big problem for those with oily or combination skin. If your skin feels taut and tight after you have cleansed your face this may be a sign that you may be over cleaning it.
Wash your face with tepid, not hot water. Use a face cloth to dab (not rubbing) your face dry.
Mascara is one makeup product that you want to keep tabs on. It's a breeding ground for bacteria. Most mascara with a tube & a wand have an antibacterial agent in them that last about 6 weeks.

You risk eye infection the longer you keep the product. If you notice the smell changes or the texture changes, throw it out. It's not worth it.
Don't use saliva or water to moisten eye cosmetics. Doing so can introduce bacteria which can arise if you overpower a product's preservative capability.

If you can help it, buy your own cosmetics. It is not advisable to share or swap. People can be harmed by others' germs when they share eye makeup. Keep this in mind when you come across "testers" at retail stores. If you do sample cosmetics at a store, be sure to use single-use applicators, such as clean cotton swabs.

Keep eyeliner pencils sharpened so that the rough wood casing won't scratch the eye or eyelid. As the pencil becomes old, the liner tip becomes stiff, requiring more pressure to apply. When this happens, replace the pencil with a new one.
Try not to apply eye makeup inside a moving vehicle. You may accidentally poke the applicator into the eye during a sudden bump or stop.

Never use an old applicator in a fresh cosmetic product. The applicator will transfer bacteria to the new cosmetic.

If you use an eyelash curler, make sure the rubber is soft, not stiff and cracking. Always use the curler before applying mascara. Persons allergic to nickel should not use a metal eyelash curler, as the frame contains nickel. The rubber curling pads should be replaced regularly, at least every two months.

Waterproof cosmetics are useful for long daily wear but excessive use can lead to potential damage to the skin. The best option is to save waterproof make-up for those rare or special occasions.

Store the beauty products in moderate temperatures, unless the label suggest otherwise. Never keep them on a sunny place.

Use only cosmetics intended for the eyes on the eyes. Don't use a lip liner as an eyeliner. You risk your eyes to contamination from your mouth or to color additives that are not approved for use around the eyes.

TRIVIA:

For a curly lashes, try heating your curler with a blow dryer. 5-6 seconds and in lowest heat is enough. Apply it on clean, mascara-free lashes. If your eyelashes are not yet curled after the first try, repeat the process.
